A YouTube Short can be up to 3 minutes long, raised from 60 seconds in October 2024. It must be vertical or square, and the target export is 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16). Any video that meets both conditions is treated as a Short automatically, with no hashtag needed.

The safe zone nobody tells you about
Your 1080 x 1920 canvas is not all usable. YouTube's own interface sits on top of it, and it covers different amounts depending on the device. Keep anything that matters inside the middle.
Bottom ~320 px
Title, channel name, description and the subscribe row all render here. Text placed low gets buried.
Right ~140 px
Like, dislike, comment, remix and share buttons stack vertically. Subjects framed right get covered.
Top ~100 px
Status bar and the Shorts header. Usually survivable, but do not put a logo or hook text up there.
These are approximate. Overlay sizes shift between phone models and between the app and the web player, so always check a draft on an actual phone before publishing.
Five mistakes that cost reach
Every one of these is a spec problem, not a creative problem, which means every one is fixable before you upload.
Exporting at 4K
YouTube caps Shorts at 1080p. You upload four times the file for zero visible gain and a slower processing queue.
Letterboxing a horizontal edit
Black bars top and bottom shrink your actual picture to a fraction of the screen. Reframe properly or shoot vertical.
Stretching to 3 minutes because you can
Completion rate drives the Shorts feed. A tight 30 seconds beats a padded 3 minutes almost every time.
Burned-in captions in the bottom third
The description and subscribe row sit right there. Move captions to the middle third of the frame.
No hook in the first second
The Shorts feed is a swipe, not a click. If frame one does not communicate the payoff, the viewer is already gone.
Uploading a 3:01 video by accident
One second over and it publishes as a regular video, outside the Shorts feed entirely. Check your timeline out point.

Does a video automatically become a Short?

Can I upload a horizontal video as a Short?
No. Horizontal videos are never classified as Shorts regardless of length. If you want horizontal footage in the Shorts feed, it has to be reframed to vertical first, either by cropping, by adding blurred side bars, or by rebuilding the layout.
